Mixing it up: Inspiring Music launches Turntablism for young learners

Empowering young creatives through turn tables

Inspiring Music is excited to announce a bold new step in music education - introducing turntablism (DJing) into classrooms across Central Bedfordshire.This innovative programme is a direct response to feedback from young people who expressed a strong interest in exploring contemporary music styles.

Following a recent Youth Engagement survey, DJing emerged as a top interest among Year 6 and Year 7 students. In response, we’ve launched a new initiative that brings whole-class turntable sets into schools, starting with Lancot Academy in Dunstable, the first to receive the equipment.

A new way to learn music

This programme offers students a hands-on, engaging entry point into music education, especially for those who may not connect with traditional instruments. It’s designed to inspire creativity, build confidence, and open up new pathways into music with;

  • Whole-class DJing sessions delivered during the summer term in Year 6

  • Continued learning into secondary school from September

  • Specialist teacher training to support high-quality delivery

“Young people have been clear that they want access to more contemporary music, and skills that match that. In response to their feedback we have broadened our offer, ensuring more students have the opportunity to explore music in ways that are relevant and inspiring to them”, Cllr Steve Owen, Executive Member for Children’s Services.

Inclusive, creative, and reflective

This initiative is part of Inspiring Music’s ongoing mission to make music education inclusive, diverse, and reflective of the interests of the young people we serve. Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re excited to expand this offer to more schools and community settings in the near future.
